A Letter to My Future Self

Dear Future Daria,

I hope you’re doing great.

As you may or may not remember, I’m writing this to you from the past. To tell you the truth, it feels a bit strange to think that you are the same person as me but (hopefully) living on the opposite side of the globe, studying in another college, and gaining an incredible both academic and life experience by speaking English all the time and exploring the culture there. Even if you‘re not, I‘m still proud of you and think that you don’t waste your time and prepare for something that seems impossible to achieve for now. But it’s a temporary feeling, trust me. Maybe in another year, you’ll be even further than you expect. Who knows?

Anyway, in this letter, I want to remember the main highlights, challenges, and lessons of your first year at the university and to remind you that all your highs and lows are actually worth the major goals of your life.

Remember, when you came to the University for the first time you had an idea that studying there would help you to “increase (your) mind, explore the world and different cultures, and travel a lot”? Or that one of the three main things you wanted to get from your college experience was “to travel around the world as an exchange student”? Or maybe that you dreamed “to make new friends from different corners of the world”? I bet you didn’t even imagine that it would come to you that soon.

Also, when you were asked to describe your expectations of the first year at the university, you said something like “well, yeah, I’m pretty sure that it’ll not be easy, but I am ready to work hard to make myself proud by the end of this part of the journey” and you did so. And, maybe, sometimes I want you to put even more effort into your work to move toward your goal faster but I know that some things are still over your head, and this is completely normal, you just need to take your time and prepare for them properly.

So, last but not the least, I just want to tell you that whatever you do now, you’re on the right way. And I hope that the moment you read my letter you have a great experience under your belt and you’ve taken away from this year all you wanted. Please, never give up and keep going. I trust you.

Love,
Daria
